Deputy Chief Justice Richard Butera has called for greater teamwork and judicial efficiency as he prepares to retire after 40 years of service in Uganda’s judiciary.
Speaking at a special Court of Appeal sitting held in his honor, Justice Butera emphasized the need for collaboration, regular meetings, and prioritization of election petitions to tackle case backlogs and improve judicial effectiveness.
The ceremony chaired by Justice Geoffrey Kiryabwire, recognized Butera’s dedication, excellence, and mentorship within the legal fraternity.
Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka commended Butera’s remarkable legacy, while Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Jane Frances Abodo praised his efforts in mentoring junior prosecutors and streamlining case management.
Amid the celebrations, Senior Counsel Peter Kabazi proposed a reform to rise the judicial retirement age to 75, a move that could extend the tenure of experienced judges like Butera.
In his farewell remarks, Justice Butera expressed gratitude for the recognition and encouraged his colleagues to uphold judicial integrity and work together to strengthen Uganda’s legal system.
