Lawyer Eron Kiiza granted UGX20M bail after over 80 days in prison

Lawyer-Eron-Kiiza

The High Court in Kampala has granted bail of 20 million Ugandan shillings to lawyer Eron Kiiza, who has been in Kitalya Prison for over 80 days following a 9-month sentence for contempt of the General Court Martial.

Kiiza was granted bail on Friday by Criminal Division Judge Michael Elubu, who ordered him to pay 20 million shillings in cash.

His three sureties his wife Sylvia Tumwebaze, his cousin Dr. Kabumba Busingye, and his friend Prima Kwagala were each required to execute a 50-million-shilling non-cash bond.

Additionally, the court directed Kiiza to surrender his passport to the Court Registrar and seek court permission before traveling outside Uganda.

Kiiza was convicted on January 7, 2025, by the General Court Martial, presided over by Brigadier Robert Freeman Mugabe, for what the court described as “unbecoming conduct” as an advocate.

He had been representing Rt Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye and Hajji Obeid Kamulegeya Lutale, who were facing charges of treachery and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

Dissatisfied with the ruling, Kiiza appealed against his sentence and applied for bail, which has now been granted.
