Polling in the Kawempe North Parliamentary by-election has officially ended, with voting closed at 4PM as per Uganda’s electoral laws.
While the exercise remained largely peaceful, sporadic clashes between security personnel and civilians resulted in injuries, including some journalists.
Reports indicate that tensions flared in certain areas, though the overall process proceeded without major disruptions.
The by-election was held to fill the parliamentary seat left vacant after the passing of former MP Muhammad Ssegirinya on January 9, 2025.
A total of 199,081 registered voters were expected to cast their ballots across nine parishes, choosing from a field of 10 candidates.
However, logistical challenges marred the voting process, with some polling stations experiencing significant delays due to malfunctioning voter verification machines.
In certain areas, voting only began around 10 AM, well past the scheduled start time of 7 AM.
Vote tallying is set to take place at Makerere University’s Institute of Public Health Auditorium, under the supervision of Kampala’s returning officer, Henry Makabai, and his assistant, Rehema Nassuna.
The final results are expected to be announced once the counting process is completed.
