Musasizi Challenges Government Accountants Over Persistent Budget Irregularities

The Minister of Finance, Henry Musasizi

The Minister of Finance, Henry Musasizi, has challenged government accountants to take greater responsibility for controlling public expenditure, questioning why budget overruns, mischarges and accumulated arrears continue despite the presence of professionally qualified accountants in public institutions.

Musasizi said accountants have a critical responsibility to track expenditure against approved budgets, monitor cash flows and financial commitments, and help prevent fraud, overspending and the accumulation of domestic arrears.

He questioned why government continues to experience budget overruns, mischarges and mounting arrears when qualified accountants are employed across public institutions.

The Minister urged public accountants to return to their core professional responsibilities and actively enforce budget discipline, stressing that accurate and timely financial information should guide government decision-making and strengthen accountability in the management of public resources.

Musasizi made the remarks while opening the three-day 31st Annual Seminar of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU) at Imperial Resort Beach Hotel in Entebbe.

The seminar is being held under the theme “Transforming Institutions and Lives for Sustainable Growth” and has attracted more than 2,000 participants from across the country and beyond.
