The Butambala Chief Magistrate’s Court has adjourned the bail hearing of former Butambala County MP Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi to Friday, August 14, 2026.

The hearing, presided over by Chief Magistrate Deogratius Ssejjemba, saw Kivumbi’s defence team, led by Counsel Medard Sseggona, present four sureties—Joel Ssenyonyi, Yasin Kiggundu, Yudaya Nantege and Saddamu Hussein Ssemmambo.

Sseggona asked court to grant Kivumbi bail, citing the need for urgent medical attention.

The prosecution alleges that on July 9, 2026, in Bugoye Village, Gombe Ward, Gombe Town Council in Butambala District, Kivumbi unlawfully incited members of the public to commit acts of violence against government officials and to overthrow the Government of Uganda.

Kivumbi, however, told court that he had been abducted, blindfolded and taken to an unknown location, where he alleges he was tortured and beaten on the head, causing him to bleed.

Meanwhile, defence lawyer Samuel Muyizzi Mulindwa told court that a habeas corpus application filed before the High Court Civil Division remains pending before Justice Collins Acellam.

The application has been adjourned to August 12, when Kivumbi is expected to appear before the High Court as his lawyers continue to seek his release and access to immediate medical treatment.

Kivumbi remains on remand at Kitalya Prison.
