Lubaga Deanery has donated more than five tonnes of food to support communities affected by hunger in the Karamoja sub-region.
The donation, consisting of beans, maize, sugar, rice and cooking oil, was contributed by Christians and well-wishers from Rubaga, Busega, Mutundwe and Ndeeba parishes, within Lubaga Deanery.
Led by Rev. Fr. Simon Peter Ssekyanzi, the team handed over the food items to Caritas Kampala at its offices in Nsambya.
Fr. Ssekyanzi appealed for more support in food items to help save lives in the hunger-affected region.
The Director of Caritas Kampala, Fr. Simon Peter Musumba, who received the donation at their offices at the Cardinal Leadership Institute Nsambya on the evening of August 10th, 2026, commended the Christians and other people of goodwill for their sacrifice.
He said the Catholic Church has a pastoral responsibility to support both the body and soul of communities in need.
The Episcopal Vicar of Kampala Vicariate, Rev. Fr. Achilles Mayanja Ssali, called for a concerted effort involving all stakeholders, including government, to find a permanent solution to food insecurity in Karamoja.
He said efforts should focus on transforming Karamoja into a food-producing region rather than relying on donations whenever drought strikes.
Meanwhile, Christians and well-wishers from St. Kizito Bwaise, led by Msgr. John Baptist Ssebayiga, have also contributed food items and money towards the hunger relief efforts.
This is the second major contribution received within a week.
The first contribution, delivered on July 31st, was mobilised by the Archbishop of Kampala, the Most Reverend Paul Ssemogerere, together with the Bishop of Kasana-Luweero Diocese, the Rt. Rev. Lawrence Mukasa.
It included at least one tonne of sugar, one tonne of maize flour and half a tonne of rice, among other items.
