The Leader of the Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi, has asked the government to account for Ugandans repatriated from South Africa following the recent wave of anti-migrant violence.
According to the government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other relevant agencies, about 800 Ugandans have so far been repatriated.
The returnees are currently undergoing rehabilitation at the National Leadership Institute (NALI) before being reintegrated into their communities.
Ssenyonyi called on the government to provide a detailed update on the welfare of the returnees, the rehabilitation process, and the support being offered to facilitate their reintegration.
He also urged the government to brief Parliament on the diplomatic engagements between Uganda and South Africa in response to the crisis and the measures being taken to safeguard Ugandans still living in the country.
South Africa has recently experienced widespread anti-migrant protests and xenophobic unrest, with demonstrators demanding the removal of undocumented foreign nationals from the country.
