Minister Assures MPs Vehicle Funds Will Be Released in July

The Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, Henry Musasizi

The Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, Henry Musasizi, has assured Members of Parliament that funds for the purchase of their official vehicles will be released in July.

Musasizi made the assurance while responding to concerns raised by the Government Chief Whip over delays in the disbursement of the money during the induction retreat for Members of the 12th Parliament in Munyonyo.

Addressing legislators, the Finance Minister said the vehicle funds have been prioritised and will be included in the first batch of releases for the new financial year.

He added that he had already directed his technical team to ensure the allocation is captured in the initial release.

When the Government Chief Whip sought clarification on the exact timeline, Musasizi reaffirmed that the funds would be released within the month of July.

Members of the 12th Parliament are each expected to receive UGX 315 million to facilitate the purchase of official vehicles.

The allocation amounts to approximately UGX 166.8 billion for all 529 legislators, representing an increase from the UGX 200 million that each Member of Parliament received during the previous parliamentary term.

Musasizi also highlighted efforts by the Ministry of Finance to safeguard the welfare of legislators by ensuring that parliamentary allowances remain exempt from taxation.

He noted that taxing MPs’ allowances would significantly reduce their take-home pay, adding that the vehicle allocation would have attracted a tax of up to 40 percent if it had not been exempted.

The minister said the exemption was intended to ensure that Members of Parliament receive the full value of the facilitation approved for the execution of their official duties.
