The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has said that former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago will be handed over to the police.
In a post published on his X account on Tuesday, Gen. Muhoozi made the announcement, although he did not provide further details regarding Lukwago’s whereabouts or the circumstances surrounding his detention.
The statement comes a day after widespread condemnation of Lukwago’s reported abduction by armed soldiers attached to the Special Forces Command (SFC).
According to reports, Lukwago was seized while allegedly preparing to serve court documents on the CDF in connection with the ongoing treason case involving opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye.
The Rule of Law Club at Makerere University issued a statement condemning the alleged abduction, warning that attacks on lawyers carrying out their professional duties undermine Uganda’s constitutional order and the administration of justice.
The student lawyers called for the immediate and unconditional release of Lukwago, a full and independent investigation into the reported abduction and the conduct of those involved, and an end to the targeting of lawyers, journalists, activists, and opposition figures.
The developments have sparked renewed debate over respect for the rule of law and the protection of legal practitioners in Uganda.
