Speaker Oboth-Oboth Pledges Stronger Budget Oversight and Anti-Corruption Fight

Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Oboth-Oboth

Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Oboth-Oboth, has reaffirmed the commitment of the 12th Parliament to accountability, effective oversight, and the fight against corruption as Uganda prepares to implement the 2026/27 national budget.

Delivering his remarks during the national budget reading, Oboth-Oboth said Members of Parliament had embraced President Yoweri Museveni’s call for transformative leadership made during the State of the Nation Address.

He stressed that the fight against corruption and poor service delivery is not solely the responsibility of the Executive but a shared national obligation in which Parliament has a critical role to play.

The Speaker also expressed Parliament’s support for the government’s objective of transitioning the estimated 38 percent of Ugandans still engaged in subsistence livelihoods into the formal money economy.

Oboth-Oboth pledged that the relationship between the 12th Parliament and other arms of government would remain complementary, cooperative, and focused on addressing the needs of citizens.

He further noted that Parliament will strengthen its oversight role by prioritizing public expenditure tracking and budget monitoring through its committees to ensure that public resources are utilized for their intended purposes and in accordance with approved work plans.

The Speaker said effective oversight and prudent management of public funds are essential to achieving the goals outlined in the 2026/27 national budget and delivering improved services to Ugandans.
