Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has announced strict Ebola prevention measures ahead of tomorrow’s swearing-in ceremony for councillors and the Lord Mayor-elect.
Speaking to the media at City Hall this afternoon, KCCA Deputy Executive Director Benon Kigenyi said the event will be strictly by invitation in order to limit exposure and reduce the risk of Ebola transmission.
Under the new guidelines, each councillor will be allowed only two guests, while the Lord Mayor-elect will be permitted to bring nine.
All attendees will be required to wear face masks and carry hand sanitiser. Anyone found with a body temperature of 38°C or higher will be isolated and barred from entering the venue.
Kigenyi emphasized that the measures are intended to safeguard public health, noting that no supporters will be allowed along Kimathi Avenue during the ceremony.
He also said any post-ceremony celebrations must comply with established standard operating procedures.
The ceremony will see 34 councillors take oath of office, including 19 from the National Unity Platform and 15 from the National Resistance Movement.
Kigenyi reiterated that the restrictions are necessary to ensure the safety of all participants amid the ongoing Ebola threat.
