Uganda Law Society Launches Shs2.3 Billion Fund to Challenge Sovereignty Law

Mr. Anthony Asiimwe of ULS Speaking at a press conference in Kololo

The Uganda Law Society has launched a Shs2.301 billion Sovereignty Defence Fund to challenge the newly assented Protection of Sovereignty Act, 2026, which it describes as unconstitutional and a threat to civil liberties.

Speaking at a press conference in Kololo, Anthony Asiimwe said the law poses serious risks to journalists, non-governmental organizations, lawyers, diaspora remittances, and ordinary Ugandans through what he termed vague and excessive criminal penalties.

Asiimwe said the fund will support public awareness campaigns, advocacy, coalition building, and strategic litigation aimed at overturning the law in court.

He warned that if left unchallenged, the legislation could undermine democracy, the rule of law, and foreign investment in Uganda.

Meanwhile, Ssali Babu urged Ugandans to contribute to the fund, saying the initiative is not an act of charity but a collective effort to defend constitutional freedoms and national sovereignty.
