Seven Killed in Nwoya Crash as Police Cite Reckless Overtaking

The death toll from a tragic road crash that occurred early this morning in Nwoya District has risen to seven, after three more passengers succumbed to their injuries.

According to the Police Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, the accident happened at around 1:15 a.m. at Lapok Mor and involved an Isuzu bus belonging to Nile Star Bus Company and a Sudanese-registered Benz Actros trailer.

Traffic Police Spokesperson Michael Kananura said preliminary investigations indicate that the bus driver, identified as Abugo Mandela Kadim, attempted to overtake two vehicles before colliding head-on with the oncoming trailer.

He added that early findings point to reckless driving as the cause of the crash, noting that some passengers had reportedly raised concerns before the incident but were not heeded.

Kananura further attributed the accident to careless overtaking, which remains one of the leading causes of fatal road crashes in Uganda, particularly during night travel when visibility is limited.

Authorities say investigations into the full circumstances of the crash are ongoing.
