10 Bodies Recovered After Deadly Canoe Accident on River Nguse in Kagadi

Deputy Police Spokesperson Diana Nandawula

Police have confirmed that at least 10 bodies have so far been recovered from River Nguse following a tragic canoe accident that occurred last week in Kagadi District.

The incident happened in Kyaleni Village, Pachwa Town Council, where a canoe carrying an estimated 35 to 40 passengers capsized while crossing the river.

Deputy Police Spokesperson Diana Nandawula confirmed that 15 people were rescued alive, while joint search and recovery operations are still ongoing to locate other missing passengers.

Authorities say several families have reported missing relatives believed to have been on board at the time of the accident, raising fears that the death toll could rise further.

Police also reiterated safety concerns, warning the public against overloading canoes and other water transport vessels.

They emphasized that exceeding recommended passenger capacity significantly increases the risk of fatal accidents, particularly in unpredictable water conditions.

Search operations along River Nguse are continuing as authorities work to account for all those affected.
