Pope Leo XIV Calls for Hope, Unity, and Responsible Stewardship in Equatorial Guinea

Pope Leo XIV Calls for Hope, Unity in Equatorial Guinea

Pope Leo XIV has presided over Mass at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Mongomo on the second and penultimate day of his visit to Equatorial Guinea, drawing thousands of faithful to the town near the Gabon border and birthplace of President Teodoro Obiang Nguema.

In his homily, the Pope reflected on the legacy of the missionaries who introduced Christianity to Equatorial Guinea 170 years ago.

Echoing the words of Pope St. Paul VI during his 1969 visit, he noted that Africans have become “missionaries to themselves,” carrying forward the faith with dedication and resilience.

He praised missionaries, priests, religious communities, and lay faithful for their unwavering commitment, emphasizing that their witness continues to spread God’s love, even in times of hardship and suffering.

Pope Leo XIV urged Christians to remain steadfast in following Christ through acts of charity, perseverance, and sacrifice, describing such devotion as the true mark of the Church.

He encouraged those facing hardship or persecution to place their trust in God and to continue offering love and hope to others.

Highlighting the importance of hope, the Pope said that people long for a future grounded in justice, peace, and fraternity.

He stressed that such a future must be actively shaped through human effort guided by God’s grace.

He also called on citizens to play an active role in national development by upholding human dignity and making responsible decisions for the common good.

Referencing the country’s natural resources, he urged that they be managed wisely and equitably for the benefit of all.

Concluding his message, Pope Leo XIV encouraged Equatorial Guineans to take ownership of their future, boldly proclaim the Gospel, and work together to build a just and hopeful society.
