Church Leaders Urge Financial Accountability for Catholic Media Sustainability in Uganda

Rt. Rev. Bishop Joseph Franzelli, Chairman of the Uganda Episcopal Conference Social Communications Commission

Catholic media practitioners in Uganda have been urged to prioritize financial accountability as a cornerstone for the sustainability and effective operation of Church communication platforms.

The call was made by Rt. Rev. Bishop Joseph Franzelli, Chairman of the Uganda Episcopal Conference Social Communications Commission, during his opening remarks at the annual Communications Week.

The gathering is being held at Ulrika Guest House in Kisubi and brings together Catholic communicators from across the country.

Bishop Franzelli emphasized that, alongside other essential resources, sound financial management is critical in enabling Catholic media institutions to remain operational, especially amid challenging economic conditions.

Also speaking at the event, Rev. Fr. Philip Odii, Executive Secretary of the Uganda Catholic Social Communication Commission, acknowledged ongoing efforts to strengthen Catholic media but pointed out persistent financial constraints.

He noted that limited funding continues to hinder the growth and effectiveness of diocesan and institutional communication offices.

Fr. Odii encouraged diocesan communicators to work closely with their bishops to ensure the proper implementation of the annual collection for social communications.

This initiative, approved during the Second Vatican Council, is traditionally observed on World Communications Day, which is celebrated on Pentecost.

The annual Social Communications Week is being held under the theme: “Preserving Human Voices and Faces,” drawn from the papal message for this year’s World Communications Day.
