Norbert Mao Defies Critics, Maintains Bid for Speaker of 12th Parliament

Democratic Party President and Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Norbert Mao

Democratic Party President and Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Norbert Mao, has vowed to remain in the race for Speaker of the 12th Parliament despite criticism from his contender, Anita Among.

Speaking to the media at the party headquarters in Mengo, Mao, the MP-elect for Laroo-Pece County, said his bid is driven by national interest rather than personal ambition.

He emphasized the need for a principled and reform-minded Speaker, arguing that Parliament requires leadership focused on integrity and institutional reform, particularly in addressing corruption.

Mao also questioned what he described as a tendency among Ugandans to celebrate poor leadership instead of promoting capable leaders.

Meanwhile, he called on members of the National Resistance Movement to recognize the working relationship between the two parties, noting that such cooperation should allow them to support his candidacy without hostility.
