Court denies NUP’s Mufumbiro chance to bury his wife

Kawempe Chief Magistrates Court has rejected a request by jailed National Unity Platform Deputy Spokesperson Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro

The Kawempe Chief Magistrates Court has rejected a request by jailed National Unity Platform Deputy Spokesperson Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro for temporary release to attend the burial of his wife, Edith Katende Mufumbiro, scheduled for tomorrow 11th April 2026.

In a court session held via Zoom, Chief Magistrate Doreen Ainembabazi declined to grant bail, citing concerns over the seriousness of the charges and the likelihood that the accused could abscond if released.

The court also rejected his proposed sureties, including his father, retired magistrate Moses Baligeya, and Nakawa East Member of Parliament and Lord Mayor-elect Ronald Balimwezo Nsubuga.

In her ruling, Magistrate Ainembabazi noted that investigations into the case are complete and that the prosecution is ready to proceed with an expeditious trial.

She further observed that the offence carries a maximum sentence of ten years’ imprisonment upon conviction, increasing the risk of the accused fleeing justice if released on bail.

Mufumbiro, a member of the National Unity Platform, is charged with allegedly inciting party youths to murder security personnel.

He had appealed to the court for temporary release to pay his last respects to his wife and to comfort his bereaved children.

Following the court’s decision, defence lawyers protested and walked out of the proceedings.

They refused to participate in a subsequent session in which Grade One Magistrate Damalie Agumasiimwe was expected to deliver another bail ruling involving fourteen NUP supporters accused of participating in military drills.

The lawyers also raised concerns over the authorities’ alleged refusal to produce their clients physically in court.

Edith Katende Mufumbiro died of cancer on Tuesday morning 7th April 2026 an illness that has affected her for quite a long period of time.

Edith Katende Mufumbiro, is to be laid to rest on Saturday, April 11th, 2026, in Luuka District.
