DP President General Norbert Mao Eyes Speakership in 12th Parliament

The President General of the Democratic Party (DP), Norbert Mao, who was recently elected Member of Parliament for Laroo Pece Division in Gulu City, has expressed interest in contesting for the position of Speaker of Parliament in the 12th Parliament.

Mao won the January 15 general elections, defeating his main challenger Charles Onen after securing 7,359 votes against Onen’s 5,562 votes.

Speaking to the press at the DP headquarters on Balintumwa Road in Kampala, Mao who also serves as Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs said there have been informal suggestions that he is suitable to contest for the speakership.

However, he noted that he has not yet made an official declaration, although he believes he is capable of holding the position.

He said a final decision would be made at the appropriate time, adding that further consultations are necessary, especially given the cooperation agreement between the DP and the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

On the just-concluded elections, Mao said the DP entered the race financially constrained but still managed to secure six seats in Parliament, which he described as a notable achievement.
