Police ready to maintain peace during Elections

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Abas Byakagaba, has promised a peaceful election on January 15, 2026.

IGP Byakagaba said citizens must refrain from violence but warned that if not that the law will take its course against those who cause trouble.

This assurance was made during a stakeholders’ engagement on elections including security, Electoral Commission, Political Parties and the Media organized by Inter religious council of Uganda (IRCU) at their offices in Mengo offices at Sentema Road.

Byakagaba says police is the lead security agency in ensuring peace and protecting property during elections however assisted by other sister security forces they will ensure that neither an individual nor small groups of people with bad intentions will be given a chance to distabilise peace in the country.

EC Chairperson, Justice Simon Byabakama, also emphasized the need for a peaceful environment, advising people to go home after voting to avoid clashes.

He also banned supporters from moving with symbols such as National Flags or anything that has been used during campaigns at the polling station.

Ugandans will go to the polls on Thursday 15th January 2026 to elect the president and members of parliament. Biometric Voter Verification Kit will be used to ensure transparency although some sections of the opposition maintain their stand against them.
