A total of 1,798 inmates have been granted pardons by Ugandan President Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni over the past five years, according to the Uganda Prisons Service.

Frank Baine, the Prisons Spokesperson, shared this information during a Monday media briefing at Police headquarters in naguru, revealing that the pardons have been issued between 2021 and the present.

Baine clarified that the decision to grant pardons was not politically motivated.

He explained that the pardons were based on recommendations from the Prerogative of Mercy Committee, ensuring that the process was grounded in thorough evaluation rather than political influence.
