Archbishop Obbo Hails Late Bishop Wamika’s Legacy of Faith and Service

Late Bishop of Jinja Catholic Diocese, Rt. Rev. Charles Martin Wamika

The Archbishop of Tororo Archdiocese, His Grace Dr. Emmanuel Obbo, has praised the late Bishop of Jinja Catholic Diocese, Rt. Rev. Charles Martin Wamika, for his tireless dedication, love, and service to the Church throughout his lifetime.

Archbishop Obbo described Bishop Wamika as a committed shepherd who greatly advanced the growth of the Jinja Diocese through numerous spiritual and developmental achievements, including the establishment of a diocesan seminary and a health center.

Archbishop Obbo said death is the final step of life and none of us can escape it, adding that Bishop Wamika’s legacy will continue to inspire the faithful he served so diligently.

During his tenure as Bishop, Wamika spearheaded evangelization efforts, created new parishes, and founded a diocesan minor seminary, among other developments that strengthened the diocese’s foundation.

The remarks were made during the funeral service for the late Bishop Wamika, held at Rubaga Parish–Bugembe Cathedral, the headquarters of the Jinja Catholic Diocese, where he was laid to rest.

Representing the Chairman of the Uganda Episcopal Conference, Rt. Rev. Dr. Joseph Antony Zziwa, Rt. Rev. Bishop Serverus Jjumba of Masaka Diocese paid tribute to the deceased, commending his encouragement, cooperation, and invaluable contribution to the Episcopal Conference.

Delivering a message on behalf of the President of Uganda, the Rt. Hon. Rukia Nakadama extended the government’s condolences and praised Bishop Wamika for his role in promoting social and economic development within the Jinja Diocese.

According to medical reports, Bishop Wamika passed away from metastatic prostate cancer at the age of 72 on October 22, 2025, after a short illness.

He had faithfully served as the Bishop of Jinja Catholic Diocese since 2010.
