Pope Leo XIV Urges Bishops to Reconnect with the World Amid Digital Age Challenges

Pope Leo XIV

Pope Leo XIV has called for renewed engagement with the world, especially in addressing inappropriate conduct by clergy, emphasizing the importance of transparency and responsibility in today’s digital age.

Speaking during a question-and-answer session with newly appointed bishops at the conclusion of their audience in the Synod Hall, the Pope tackled several key themes, chief among them, the Church’s relationship with social media.

Acknowledging the pervasive influence of digital platforms, Pope Leo warned of the risks they pose, noting, “We live in a world where everyone feels entitled to say whatever they want, even falsehoods.”

While recognizing the value of social media in evangelization and outreach, he stressed the need for prudence and professionalism.

“The Church must not fall into the traps set by digital misinformation or superficial communication,” the Pontiff said.

He urged bishops to seek guidance from communication experts to protect the Church’s credibility and mission.

According to a statement from the Holy See Press Office, Pope Leo also reflected on the personal challenges new bishops often face including fear, a sense of unworthiness, and the contrast between their past expectations and the demands of their ministry.

He encouraged the bishops to embrace the universality of the Church and to bear witness in a world that continues to grapple with existential questions and moral uncertainty. “We must renew contact with men and women searching for the meaning of life and the reality of evil,” he said.

The Pope further urged them to remain grounded in prayer and to trust unconditionally in the Holy Spirit, “the source of your calling.”

The gathering brought together 192 bishops from across the globe for a formation course that began on September 4.

Established in 1994, this initiative, jointly organized by the Dicastery for Evangelization and the Dicastery for Bishops, aims to provide newly appointed bishops with tools and guidance to carry out their responsibilities effectively.
