Tumukunde returns to political arena with message of reconciliation and dialogue

Retired General Henry Tumukunde

Retired General Henry Tumukunde has officially declared his bid to represent Rukungiri Municipality in Parliament, marking his return to active politics ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Speaking after submitting his nomination forms during the ongoing National Resistance Movement (NRM) internal processes, Tumukunde struck a tone of unity and reconciliation.

In a surprising call that could stir national political conversation, Tumukunde urged President Yoweri Museveni to consider opening dialogue with long-time opposition figure Dr. Kizza Besigye, who is currently in custody over charges related to alleged illegal possession of firearms.

Tumukunde said that national healing and political stability can only be achieved if leaders are willing to engage in meaningful dialogue, regardless of past rivalries.

His comments are seen by some as an attempt to reframe the often combative political climate in Uganda.

Highlighting Rukungiri’s historical and political significance, Tumukunde said he seeks to restore the area’s influence and ensure it benefits from national development.

His re-entry into the political space, combined with his conciliatory message, is likely to shape the narrative in the run-up to the 2026 elections.
