UMU to develop accredited chaplaincy program to certify Chaplains nationwide

Deputy Vice Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Dr. Christopher Mukidi

Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) is planning to upgrade its current chaplaincy short course into a fully accredited academic program designed to certify chaplains across Uganda.

This announcement was made by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Dr. Christopher Mukidi, during the opening of a week-long chaplaincy training at UMU’s main campus in Nkozi.

Fr. Mukidi explained that although the chaplaincy training is currently offered as a short course, it plays a crucial role in building the capacity of chaplains to provide meaningful spiritual guidance amid changing social and moral contexts.

He revealed plans to register the training with the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) as an academic program, possibly at certificate or diploma level.

This will help formalize chaplaincy training and ensure all chaplains are nationally certified.

Fr. Mukidi also called for support from Catholic Bishops, noting that their endorsement is essential for the successful implementation and recognition of the initiative.

He emphasized that a certified chaplaincy program will increase the relevance of chaplains in their communities and expands their scope of service.

Fr. Deogratious Tumwine, chaplain of St. Andrea Kaahwa College and St. James Secondary School in Hoima Diocese, welcomed the idea.

He said the move will make chaplains more responsive to community needs and improve their effectiveness.

This development reflects UMU’s ongoing commitment to strengthening spiritual leadership and professionalizing chaplaincy services across Uganda.
