Fourteen days ahead of Uganda Martyrs’ Day celebrations, police have ramped up safety measures to protect thousands of pilgrims trekking to Namugongo.
According to SP Michael Kananura, the Traffic Police Spokesperson, the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety has deployed officers on motorcycles, vehicles, and foot patrols to provide escort services and ensure the safety of pilgrims.
Kananura explains that police officers will operate in a “chain format,” handing over pilgrims to their colleagues at designated handover points along the route.
This year, the animating diocese, Lugazi Diocese, expects over 25,000 foot pilgrims to trek from all 33 parishes to the Catholic Shrine in Namugongo.
Msgr. Dr. Richard Kayondo, the Vicar General of Lugazi Diocese, shared that the journey will begin on June 1st at 5:00 a.m, with pilgrims expected to reach Namugongo by 4:00 p.m. the same day in a triumphal entry, followed by Mass.
To ensure safety during their journey, Traffic Police Spokesperson SP Michael Kananura advises pilgrims to wear reflector jackets at night, move in groups, and walk on the right-hand side of the road under police guidance.
Motorists, on the other hand, are urged to exercise extra caution, reduce speed limits along pilgrim routes, and avoid overtaking and speeding on sharp corners and narrow roads.
With the added protection and guidance, authorities hope to ensure a safe and successful celebration for all participants.
