The Inter-Religious Council of Uganda (IRCU) has criticized the Government for allowing the rapid spread of faith-based groups with no clear doctrine.
This came as a delegation from IRCU, led by Apostle Joseph Sserwadda of the Born-again faith, appeared before the Joint Parliamentary Committees on Legal and Gender Affairs to present their views on the ongoing scrutiny of the Marriage and Sexual Offences Bills, 2024.
Tensions arose when Apostle Sserwadda strongly advocated for monogamy, a stance that some MPs noted was at odds with other Christian denominations.
Responding to the concerns, he accused the Government of indiscriminately licensing religious groups under the guise of Christianity without properly assessing their doctrines and principles.
During the session, Apostle Sserwadda urged the committee to remove certain clauses in the proposed Marriage Bill, particularly those endorsing legal divorce and cohabitation.
