The Uganda Police Force are streamlining guidelines that will be followed in implementing President Yoweri Museveni’s directive through which he banned issuance of police bonds to petty criminals.
In his televised New Year address to the nation, the President also said he had asked the Judiciary through the Chief Justice to reconsider granting bail to suspects on capital offenses who are still on trial.
Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson while addressing the media on behalf of ACP Kituuma Rusoke, the Police Spokesperson at the Police headquarters Naguru, Kampala, noted that the anticipated guidelines will help officers to avoid misinterpreting the directive on bond.
He says that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Abbas Byakagaba will soon release these guidelines that will be indicating cases that don’t require police bond and those whose suspects can access the bond.
Onyango adds that not every crime is abetting insecurity in the country once a police bond is awarded to the suspect as it was misinterpreted by many people.
