Landlords at the Kiteezi buffer zone have declined to vacate the place unless they are compensated by the Government fully.

On Tuesday they were forced to strike following the directive from the State Minister for Kampala and Metropolitan Affairs, Kabuye Kyofatogabye that they should vacate the area to allow the construction of a fence around the Kiteezi dump site.

The National Environment (Waste Management) Regulations SI No.49 of 2020 and NEMA guidelines on solid waste management recommend a buffer zone of at least 1,000 meters to ensure health and safety of people living around the area.

While addressing the media at Kiteezi and Lusanja villages, the landlords said that they are not going to leave as they have been directed by the Government unless they are fully compensated.

One Shirah Nalweyiso, a landlord at Lusanja says the said shs 2 million which they were offered was not justified to the landlords as the case as with the former tenants of the area.

They now call upon President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to come to their rescue.

Meanwhile, a Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Council Special Committee Report on the Kiteezi landfill disclosed that it sits on 40 acres, of which 36 acres are heavily burdened by waste and only 4 acres remain unoccupied by garbage which they asay is a big threat to neighbouring residents.

This comes after the Government through Minister Kyofatogabye officially handed over the Kiteezi landfill to a Ghanaian investor, Dr. Joseph Sian Agyepong, Executive Chairman of the Jospong Group of Companies from Ghana to tackle the country’s garbage management issues by converting waste into fertilizers and other recyclable materials.
