The President of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC), Jimmy Michael Akena, has reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for the welfare and rights of Ugandan children, urging political leaders to prioritise education, nutrition and other pressing national challenges.
Akena expressed concern over persistent cases of child malnutrition and increasing school dropout rates, questioning why such critical issues continue to receive less attention than political ambitions, power struggles and personal rivalries.
He called on leaders across the political divide to redirect their attention towards addressing challenges affecting ordinary Ugandans, particularly children, whose wellbeing he said should be central to national development priorities.
Akena also emphasised the importance of upholding the Constitution, citing Article 208 and raising concerns about the involvement of serving military personnel in partisan political activities.
He called for respect for constitutional provisions governing the role and conduct of the armed forces, stressing the importance of maintaining the distinction between military service and partisan politics.
