The Committee on Public Accounts (Central Government) has tasked the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) to explain the measures Government has undertaken to respond to emergencies caused by heavy rains across the country.
The committee, chaired by Patrick Nsamba, raised the concern while scrutinising the Office of the Prime Minister’s response to emergencies.
Appearing before the committee, the Permanent Secretary, Alex Kakooza, attributed delays in responding to emergencies to limited financial resources, noting that the needs arising from emergencies across the country exceed the available funding.
Kakooza appealed to the committee to advocate for an increased budgetary allocation to enable Government to respond more effectively to emergencies and provide adequate assistance to affected communities.
The committee is seeking clarification on the interventions in place to ensure timely responses to emergencies, particularly those caused by heavy rains, as well as improved support for communities affected by disasters.
