The Apostolic Nuncio to Uganda, Archbishop Tomasz Grysa, has joined Catholic faithful at St. Peter’s Church, Nsambya, to commemorate All Souls’ Day, a solemn occasion dedicated to remembering and praying for the departed.
All Souls’ Day, observed annually on November 2, is an important day in the Catholic Church when Christians remember the faithful departed and offer prayers for their souls, particularly those believed to be undergoing purification before entering the fullness of God’s presence.
Presiding over the Eucharistic celebration, Archbishop Grysa acknowledged that death brings profound sorrow, especially when families lose their loved ones, but urged Christians not to allow grief to overshadow their faith and hope in God’s promise of eternal life.
He noted that while the loss of relatives, friends and other loved ones leaves an irreplaceable gap in people’s lives, Christians should remain steadfast in their faith, trusting in God’s mercy and continuing to pray for those who have departed this world.
The Archbishop explained that the departed, like the living, may have died with spiritual imperfections and therefore need the prayers and intercession of the faithful as they await the fullness of God’s presence.
He encouraged Christians to make remembering the dead an integral part of their spiritual lives, emphasising the importance of praying for the departed and seeking God’s mercy on their behalf.
Archbishop Grysa also called on the congregation to observe moments of silence and prayer for innocent people who have lost their lives in wars and political conflicts across different parts of the world.
He expressed concern over the continued loss of innocent lives, urging those responsible for violence and conflicts to reflect on their actions and embrace peace in order to save lives.
The Apostolic Nuncio further challenged Christians to use the month of November as a period of prayer, remembrance and personal spiritual reflection.
He urged the faithful to examine their relationship with God, identify areas where they may be falling short of His expectations and make the necessary changes to live according to God’s will.
Archbishop Grysa reminded Christians that remembering the departed should go beyond mourning, serving instead as an opportunity for the living to reflect on their own spiritual journey, strengthen their faith and prepare for the promise of eternal life.
The All Souls’ Day celebration at St. Peter’s Church, Nsambya, brought together Catholic faithful in prayer and remembrance of family members, friends and all those who have passed away.
