The opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) has opposed a private member’s bill seeking to change the procedures for electing, supervising and removing the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, arguing that the proposed legislation is specifically intended to target the party.
The opposition follows the gazetting of the bill, paving the way for its consideration by Parliament.
Addressing journalists at the party headquarters in Makerere-Kavule on Monday, NUP Secretary General Lewis Lubongoya said the party would oppose the proposed legislation and called on Parliament not to allow it to proceed.
Lubongoya made the remarks while receiving 10,000 tree seedlings donated by party members. The seedlings are expected to be planted on November 1, 2026, as part of activities marking Bobi Wine’s Solidarity Day.
He also questioned the involvement of some independent Members of Parliament in the process of electing the Leader of the Opposition, alleging that some had signed a memorandum with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
Lubongoya urged Ugandans to unite in opposing the bill, maintaining that the proposed changes could affect the opposition’s role in Parliament.
The bill is expected to undergo parliamentary consideration following its gazetting, with NUP signalling its intention to challenge the proposed changes.
