The opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) has condemned the continued detention of opposition leaders Dr Kizza Besigye and Elias Lukwago amid reports that the two are experiencing critical health conditions.
Addressing journalists at the party headquarters in Makerere-Kavule, NUP Secretary General Lewis Lubongoya said it was wrong for the government to continue detaining individuals who are reportedly ill, warning that their health conditions could deteriorate beyond recovery while in custody.
Lubongoya argued that detaining sick suspects could also undermine efforts to obtain reliable information from them during investigations, as their health conditions may affect their ability to participate effectively in the process.
He further revealed that NUP had received information indicating that Dr Besigye could barely speak or write, adding that the opposition leader required specialised medical attention to facilitate his recovery.
The NUP Secretary General called on Ugandans to demand the immediate release of all political prisoners, reiterating the party’s concerns over the continued detention of opposition figures and their welfare while in custody.
