The opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) has announced plans to conduct nationwide tree-planting activities as part of its monthly commemoration of Kyagulanyi Day, observed on the first Sunday of every month.
The party says the initiative is aimed at promoting environmental conservation and supporting efforts to protect the environment.
Addressing journalists at the party headquarters in Makerere-Kavule, NUP spokesperson and Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Joel Ssenyonyi, said the party intends to contribute to environmental protection through tree planting, particularly at a time when the government is pushing for restrictions on the use of charcoal.
Ssenyonyi also challenged security agencies to refrain from disrupting the planned activities, recalling incidents during the first Sunday of October when some party members were reportedly arrested at churches and other locations.
Meanwhile, NUP National Coordinator Habibu Buwembo said the party was planning a series of charitable activities running from today until November 1, 2026.
Buwembo said the activities would include visits to prisoners and support for their children, as the party seeks to reach out to vulnerable communities and provide assistance to those in need.
