National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearers who lost in the recently concluded 2026 general elections are calling for a meeting with President Yoweri Museveni to address what they describe as internal challenges affecting the ruling party.
The group made the call after meeting NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong at the party Secretariat, where they raised a number of concerns, including alleged disunity and the conduct of some senior party members during the elections.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, the chairperson of the group, Hon. Sarah Opendi, who lost the Tororo District Woman Member of Parliament seat, said they have been seeking an audience with President Museveni since February but have so far only received assurances that the meeting would be arranged.
Opendi said their meeting with Secretary General Todwong resulted in a commitment to engage President Museveni and facilitate the meeting, which she said is necessary to address the concerns of the affected flag bearers and strengthen the party.
She also alleged that some senior NRM members worked against official party flag bearers during the elections, a practice she said requires urgent intervention by the party chairperson.
Opendi further said several affected candidates filed election petitions in an attempt to reclaim what they believe were their victories, but expressed concern over what she described as unexplained delays in the handling of the cases.
She said that despite the publication of the relevant gazette, no action had been taken on some of the matters by September.
Meanwhile, NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong confirmed that the group had met him to discuss several issues, including their request to meet President Museveni and the status of their pending election-related court cases.
Todwong said the concerns raised by the group would be considered as the party works to address their grievances and strengthen cohesion within the NRM.
