Cabinet has approved the use of the National Identification Number (NIN), issued by the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA), as the Tax Identification Number (TIN) going forward.

The decision was confirmed by the Minister for Information, Communication Technology and National Guidance, Justine Kasule Lumumba, while addressing the media at the Uganda Media Centre.

Lumumba said Uganda’s tax registration system has for years relied on a separate and largely manual TIN-based process.

She said although the system has served its purpose, it has resulted in outdated and inconsistent records, creating weaknesses in data accuracy, tax compliance, and service delivery.

According to Lumumba, adopting the NIN as the TIN will enable government to establish one consistent identity for every taxpayer.

She added that the move will improve the accuracy of the taxpayers’ register, strengthen government’s ability to identify and trace taxpayers, and enhance the interoperability of government data systems.
