The Archbishop of Mbarara, Most Rev. Lambert Bainomugisha, has urged parents to make their homes safe, loving and supportive environments for children to prevent them from engaging in drug abuse, betting and other harmful activities that can destroy their lives.

Archbishop Bainomugisha made the call while presiding over a Eucharistic celebration held in thanksgiving for the Silver Jubilee of Kabulamuliro Serenity Centre in Wakiso District, Uganda’s pioneer rehabilitation facility for people struggling with alcohol and substance abuse.

The Archbishop warned that harsh treatment, neglect and rude behaviour by parents can push children away from home, leaving them vulnerable to negative peer influence and other harmful behaviours.

He encouraged parents to show their children love, guidance and understanding, saying a supportive home plays an important role in shaping children’s character and protecting them from destructive influences.

Archbishop Bainomugisha also appealed to individuals and families with loved ones struggling with addiction to give them another opportunity for a new beginning through professional care, compassion, discipline, counselling, prayer and community support.

He said people affected by addiction should not simply be judged or condemned, but should be guided with truth, love and patience to help them regain hope and dignity.

The Archbishop emphasized that addiction does not define a person’s worth, noting that those struggling with substance abuse can rediscover their dignity, rebuild their lives and positively contribute to society when given the right support.

He commended Kabulamuliro Serenity Centre for its 25 years of service in rehabilitating people affected by alcohol and substance abuse, saying its work has given many individuals and families renewed hope and an opportunity for a better life.
