The Kampala Archdiocese will on Friday, July 31, 2026, dispatch its first consignment of humanitarian relief to communities affected by the worsening food crisis in the Karamoja sub-region, the Director of Caritas Kampala, Rev. Fr. John Peter Musumba, has announced.
Fr. Musumba made the announcement during a joint press briefing organized by the Kampala Archdiocese and Caritas Kampala, where Church leaders launched an appeal to clergy, religious communities and the laity to mobilize food and financial support for vulnerable families in Karamoja.
He said the humanitarian campaign, which commenced earlier this month, will run until September and seeks to collect food items and monetary donations that will be delivered to the most affected communities in the dioceses of Kotido and Moroto.
According to Fr. Musumba, the first batch of relief supplies will leave Kampala next Friday as part of the Church’s immediate response to the growing humanitarian needs in the region.
He explained that the campaign is not limited to the Kampala Archdiocese but forms part of a nationwide initiative spearheaded by the Catholic Church in Uganda following an appeal by the Uganda Episcopal Conference for all dioceses to stand in solidarity with the people of Karamoja.
Fr. Musumba noted that dioceses across the country are mobilizing resources to ensure that food reaches families hardest hit by the prolonged food shortages.
He appealed to Catholics and all people of goodwill to contribute generously towards the relief effort, saying every donation would help ease the suffering of vulnerable households struggling to access basic food supplies.
The latest appeal follows a call by the Archbishop of Kampala, His Grace Paul Ssemogerere, urging Ugandans to respond with compassion to the worsening humanitarian situation in Karamoja.
The Archdiocese has designated the Caritas Kampala offices on Old Ggaba Road in Nsambya as the official collection centre for food items, essential relief supplies and financial contributions.
Caritas Uganda is coordinating the collection and distribution of the donations to ensure they reach the intended beneficiaries in an accountable and transparent manner.
The relief campaign comes amid growing concern over food insecurity in Karamoja, with Church leaders urging Ugandans to demonstrate solidarity through donations, prayer and acts of charity as thousands of families continue to face severe hunger.
