The High Court in Kampala has scheduled Thursday, July 30, at 9:00 a.m. to deliver its ruling on the bail application filed by former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago.

The application was heard in chambers before Justice David Matovu, who directed both the prosecution and the defence to file written submissions before the court determines whether Lukwago should be released on bail.

Speaking after the hearing, Lukwago’s lawyer and Busiro East MP, Medard Sseggona, said the defence presented four sureties in support of the application. These include Mukono Municipality MP Betty Nambooze, former Kawempe North MP Moses Kasibante, Lukwago’s elder brother Hajj Abdu Ssewankambo, and Chrysestom Katumba.

Sseggona said the defence and prosecution had agreed on a timetable for filing their written submissions. Under the schedule, the prosecution is expected to file its response by midday on Tuesday, while the defence will submit its rejoinder by 11:00 p.m. the same day before the court considers the application.

He also expressed concern over Lukwago’s health, saying his condition continues to deteriorate while in custody.

According to the defence, Lukwago’s declining health is among the key grounds advanced in support of his application for bail pending the hearing and determination of the criminal case against him.

Lukwago is currently on remand at Luzira Prison after being charged with misprision, an offence that relates to the concealment of information about a serious crime.

Justice Matovu is expected to determine on July 30 whether the former Kampala Lord Mayor has met the legal requirements for release on bail as the case continues before the High Court.
