President Yoweri Museveni has urged Ugandans to elect village chairpersons who will support government efforts to eliminate corruption and strengthen accountability at the grassroots.
Speaking in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief during the pass-out ceremony of 11,948 Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) recruits at the Basic Military Training Schools in Kaweweta, Mubende District, Museveni said local leaders should be people of integrity who can safeguard public resources and promote effective service delivery.
He called on voters to use the upcoming village elections to choose leaders committed to fighting corruption, describing the exercise as vital to national development.
The President also emphasized the importance of discipline, professionalism and accountability within the security forces, saying that a strong economy and an effective military depend on honest leadership and responsible governance at every level of society.
Meanwhile, the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, said Uganda remains peaceful, secure and on course for development despite what he described as attempts by foreign-backed actors to undermine the country.
Gen. Muhoozi alleged that “agents of foreign interests” and “neocolonialist sympathizers” were working to weaken Uganda’s national independence.
He said the UPDF and other security agencies would act against individuals within the political and media spheres whom they consider to be threats to national security, adding that Uganda would not allow external interests to shape its national narrative or future.
The Chief of Defence Forces also identified corruption and poor service delivery as key challenges requiring urgent attention.
