PFF Condemns Museveni Over Claims on Besigye Trial Delays, Calls for Extension of Voter Registration

PFF Deputy President Lulume Bayiga

The People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) has condemned President Yoweri Museveni’s recent remarks accusing opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye of deliberately delaying his treason trial through repeated court challenges and hunger strikes instead of defending himself.

In a televised national address, President Museveni argued that if Dr. Besigye believes the charges against him are politically motivated, he should instead seek a speedy trial to clear his name, insisting that serious criminal cases require prompt accountability rather than what he described as delaying tactics.

However, speaking during a press conference at the party headquarters along Katonga Road in Kampala, PFF Deputy President Lulume Bayiga dismissed the claims, arguing that delays in the judicial process are instead caused by state institutions.

Bayiga alleged that the arrest and intimidation of lawyers involved in the case, including Counsel Eron Kiiza, who was reportedly arrested at the Makindye General Court Martial, have undermined the fairness and progress of proceedings.

He also criticized remarks attributed to the President suggesting that some suspects should be denied bail, saying such statements risk undermining the integrity of court processes.

On the same occasion, Bayiga urged the Electoral Commission to extend the ongoing village voter registration exercise, arguing that the limited registration days and inadequate staffing could disenfranchise many Ugandans.

The Electoral Commission has scheduled the village voter register update exercise to run from July 6 to July 7.
