Mayiga Warns Inhumane Acts and Rights Violations Could Undermine Uganda’s Economic Growth

The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga

The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has expressed concern over what he described as rising inhumane acts in the country, warning that they could discourage investment and undermine Uganda’s economic growth in the current financial year.

Speaking during the Buganda Lukiiko at Bulange, Mengo, Mayiga emphasized that a stable, secure, and law-abiding environment is essential for attracting both local and foreign investors.

He urged authorities to consistently uphold human rights and the rule of law in order to safeguard the country’s economic prospects.

Mayiga cited reports of kidnappings, illegal detention centers, and other practices he said undermine legal processes and damage Uganda’s international image.

He warned that continued weakening of the rule of law would have far-reaching economic, social, and political consequences for the country.

The Katikkiro further advised security agencies to ensure due process during arrests, including identifying themselves, detaining suspects only in gazetted facilities, and presenting them before courts of law.
