The Opposition People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) has demanded an apology from the Head of State over what it describes as “notorious actions” that it says have undermined human rights, media freedom, and democratic governance in the country.
Speaking at the party’s headquarters, Acting Chairperson Dr. Lulume Bayiga cited the reported arrest of human rights activist Miria Matembe, the shutdown of Nation Media Group outlets, and the alleged abduction of political actors as examples of actions that require accountability.
Dr. Bayiga also called for the resignation of Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) Executive Director Nyombi Thembo, accusing him of failing to fulfill his mandate to regulate and protect the media.
He alleged that the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, had effectively usurped the Commission’s authority.
On Monday, Nyombi Thembo said in a TikTok post that he had no prior knowledge of the shutdown of Nation Media Group platforms.
He stated that he only became aware of the development after he was unable to access the broadcaster’s television and radio stations, including NTV Uganda, Spark TV, Dembe FM, and KFM, while at home.
The PFF is demanding the immediate restoration of Nation Media Group’s operations and compensation for losses allegedly incurred during the shutdown.
The party also called for the immediate release of Miria Matembe, who was reportedly arrested on Sunday.
The government had not publicly responded to the PFF’s demands at the time of publication.
