The Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Oboth-Oboth, has called on Members of Parliament to focus on effective governance, national development, and fulfilling their campaign promises as the country embarks on a new parliamentary term.
Speaking ahead of the President’s State of the Nation Address at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, Oboth described the occasion as an important constitutional milestone that enables the government to account to citizens and outline its priorities for the year ahead.
He congratulated legislators on their election to the 12th Parliament and reminded them that winning an election marks only the beginning of leadership.
Oboth urged Members of Parliament to embrace the responsibilities that come with public office and remain committed to serving the interests of their constituents.
The Speaker also reaffirmed Parliament’s commitment to supporting the government’s tenfold economic growth strategy, which aims to expand Uganda’s economy from approximately USD 50 billion to USD 500 billion by 2040.
He emphasized the need for lawmakers to work closely with the Executive in advancing policies and legislation that promote economic transformation, job creation, and sustainable development.
On the arrangements for the State of the Nation Address, Oboth explained that attendance had been restricted primarily to Members of Parliament as a precautionary measure against the threat of Ebola.
He commended the government for its swift response to public health concerns and the measures put in place to safeguard citizens from potential outbreaks.
The Speaker expressed confidence that the country would continue to overcome emerging challenges through coordinated efforts between government institutions and the public.
