Oboth-Oboth (L) Elected Speaker of Uganda’s 12th Parliament

West Budama County East Member of Parliament, Jacob Oboth Oboth, has been elected Speaker of the 12th Parliament of Uganda.

During the election held on Sunday, May 25, at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, Oboth Oboth secured a landslide victory with 441 votes.

He defeated Paul Mwiru of the National Unity Platform, who garnered 60 votes, and Norbert Mao of the Democratic Party, who received 15 votes.

A total of 519 ballots were cast, with three declared invalid.

The results were officially announced by Flavian Zeija, who presided over the election.

Following the declaration, Yoweri Museveni handed over the instruments of power to Speaker Oboth Oboth.

These included the Speaker’s Mace, the Uganda flag, the Coat of Arms, the Constitution, the Parliamentary Rules of Procedure, and the Speaker’s Rod.

In his inaugural address, Speaker Oboth Oboth pledged to champion a corruption-free Parliament anchored on accountability, evidence-based debate, people-centred leadership, result-oriented appropriation, openness, and proactive oversight.

The newly elected Speaker later presided over the nomination of candidates for the Deputy Speaker position.

Those nominated included Dokolo District Woman MP Sarah Aguti of the Uganda People’s Congress, Hoima City Woman MP Asinansi Nyakato of the People’s Front for Freedom, Ruhinda North County MP Thomas Tayebwa, and Mawogola North County MP Godfrey Aine Kaguta.
