MP Sarah Babirye Kityo Withdraws from Deputy Speaker Race, Cites Need for Continuity in Leadership

Bukoto East Member of Parliament Sarah Babirye Kityo has withdrawn from the race for Deputy Speaker of Parliament

Bukoto East Member of Parliament Sarah Babirye Kityo has withdrawn from the race for Deputy Speaker of Parliament, citing the importance of institutional memory and continuity in the leadership of the 12th Parliament.

Babirye said she made the decision after consultations with senior leaders who advised that stepping aside would help strengthen stability in Parliament’s leadership.

She noted that the 11th Parliament experienced operational challenges due to both the Speaker and Deputy Speaker being new in office.

She emphasized that leadership positions should be guided by competence, experience, and continuity rather than gender considerations, cautioning against the use of emotions or the gender card in the contest.

Reflecting on her past leadership at the Uganda Netball Federation, where she previously served as president, Babirye said she has forgiven outgoing Speaker Anita Annet Among and Dr. Bernard Ogwel.

However, she alleged that the two had frustrated her after she reportedly refused to engage in acts of forgery, bribery, and corruption during her tenure.

Babirye’s withdrawal narrows the field in the Deputy Speaker race as political consultations continue ahead of the upcoming parliamentary leadership elections.
