The Uganda Human Rights Commission has congratulated President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni ahead of his swearing-in for a new term, while urging the government to strengthen human rights protections, accountability, and inclusive economic empowerment.
In a statement issued on May 11, 2026, UHRC Chairperson Mariam Wangadya described the inauguration as a renewal of the constitutional bond between leaders and citizens.
Wangadya commended Uganda’s progress in establishing legal and institutional frameworks for the promotion and protection of human rights. However, she stressed that meaningful progress must also be reflected in the everyday lives of citizens.
The commission emphasized that wealth creation and economic empowerment are fundamental human rights concerns, calling on the government to ensure that opportunities are accessible to young people, women, and marginalized communities.
UHRC further urged the government to promote citizen-centered governance anchored in justice, accountability, and the rule of law.
The commission reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at strengthening Uganda’s human rights record during Museveni’s new term in office.
