Parliament remains in shock following the death of Kalangala District Woman MP, Hellen Nakimuli, who passed away on April 19, 2026.
Leaders from island constituencies have paid tribute to the late legislator, describing her as a fearless and dedicated advocate for marginalized communities.
Suzan Mugabi and Moses Kabusu praised Nakimuli’s commitment to improving the lives of people living on Uganda’s islands.
They highlighted her tireless efforts in lobbying for essential services such as water ambulances and better healthcare, as well as her strong stance in defending fishing communities against alleged mistreatment by Uganda People’s Defence Force marines.
Hellen Nakimuli had just secured her second term in Parliament in the 2026 general elections, having first been elected in 2021.
Her re-election was seen as a testament to her popularity and impact among constituents.
Beyond her legislative role, Nakimuli was also active in sports and leadership within Parliament.
She served as captain of the parliamentary volleyball team, guiding it to two victories at the East African Parliamentary Games.
In addition, she held the position of Shadow Minister for Information and ICT and was among the few Orthodox Christianity representatives in Parliament.
Her passing leaves a significant void in both political and community leadership, particularly among island districts she so passionately represented.
