The Opposition in Uganda is mourning the sudden death of Kalangala District Woman MP Helen Nakimuli.
The circumstances surrounding her passing are unclear, with Opposition Leader Joel Ssenyonyi revealing the MP drove herself to the hospital on Saturday morning, believing she was undergoing a routine procedure.
Nakimuli, a prominent voice within the National Unity Platform (NUP), died at the Alexandria Medical Centre in Kampala following a surgery.
Ssenyonyi, who also serves as the NUP spokesperson, has shared his disbelief and grief saying they had planned by today Monday 20th April 2026 for parliamentary business to coordinate all opposition MPs for urgent parliamentary work given her role as the Shadow Minister for Information.
Hon. Nakimuli Rose to prominence as a champion of her island community was elected for the parliamentary seat in the 2021 elections, defeating Aidah Nabayiga, and had just been re-elected for the 12th parliament given her tireless efforts to improved services at the island district of Kalangala, focusing on healthcare, transportation, and social welfare.
